🚛 Another Border Gate Opens - Livestock trade has resumed at the Santa Teresa, New Mexico, crossing, making it the second U.S. port to reopen to Mexican cattle with new EID tracking and screwworm safeguards in place. The historically high-volume crossing is expected to start slowly as cattle move through stricter inspection and health protocols.
💧 Smarter Water Monitoring - RanchBot uses satellite-connected sensors to give farmers and ranchers real-time information on wells, pumps, tanks and other water systems, even where cell service is limited. Remote monitoring can help producers catch problems sooner, reduce unnecessary trips and make better decisions about water use across their operation.
💉 New Defense Against Theileria - Cattle producers now have access to the first targeted vaccine for Theileria, a tick-borne disease spread by the invasive Asian longhorned tick that can cause anemia, reproductive losses and death. The prescription vaccine gives producers in affected or at-risk areas a new tool to protect herd health as the tick continues to spread across the U.S.
🧬 Genetics Meet the Pasture - Commercial herd phenotyping helps producers identify which cattle truly perform best under the forage, climate and management conditions of their own operation. Combining real-world performance data with genetic information can lead to better selection decisions and cattle that are better suited to the environment where they need to work.
🐄 Is the Herd Bottoming Out? - After seven years of herd liquidation, slowing cow culling and early signs of increased heifer breeding suggest the U.S. beef cow herd may finally be reaching a cyclical low. Significant rebuilding will still take time, with only slight herd growth expected heading into 2027.
